The 14th St Joseph Sliema Girl Guides and the 2nd Pembroke Girl Guide Unit recently experienced an unforgettable overseas Ranger Camp in Sicily. For the Pembroke Rangers, this was their very first trip abroad, and it also marked the first joint overseas camp for both units. The camp provided a unique opportunity to explore charming towns such as Noto, Modena, Ortygia and Polizzi, while also indulging in the island’s renowned cuisine, from traditional Sicilian dishes to the famous cannoli. The girls embraced activities that are not available in Malta, making the camp an enriching and memorable adventure.

The campsite, located in Alia near Palermo, was nestled in a peaceful paddock surrounded by mountains and nature. After action-packed days filled with culture, history, beaches and exploration, returning each evening to such tranquility was a refreshing contrast. Time spent with the horses, whether riding or simply interacting with them, added another special dimension to the camp.
Highlights of the trip included a challenging adventure park experience in the forest, where some girls bravely overcame fears of high ziplines and rope courses. The beauty of the forest was unforgettable, especially when a curious fox appeared during a barbecue. Equally popular were visits to a water park and the sulfur baths, the latter initially approached with hesitation but quickly embraced for its unique sensations and skin benefits.
A day by the lake brought more enjoyment through boat rides, canoeing, and swimming. Meanwhile, Sicily’s irresistible food became a running theme of the trip. A visit to a local cheese and ricotta producer turned into a feast of olive oils, salamis, and an abundance of cheeses, which no one could resist. Beyond the stunning landscapes, incredible food and exciting activities, the camp also fostered strong bonds of friendship between the Sliema and Pembroke Guides, as well as teamwork among the leaders. These connections, along with the memories of their Sicilian adventures, will remain long after their return to Malta.
Though the camp ended all too soon, the wide variety of experiences, the breathtaking natural surroundings, and the camaraderie shared made this overseas adventure truly unforgettable.
