Last August, the 7th Rabat Girl Guides embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Our Chalet, one of WAGGGS World Centres nestled in the picturesque Swiss Alps. With three diverse programs to choose from, each tailored to a unique experience, the group of nine Senior Rangers and three Adult Volunteers chose the ‘Explore’ Programme. This adventure promised a blend of thrilling adventures, picturesque hikes, and sightseeing.
Departing from Malta on the 18th of August 2023, the Rabat Unit made its way to the Zurich airport, filled with eager anticipation for the adventure that lay ahead. Acknowledging the length of the journey, they planned a stopover in the enchanting town of Interlaken. The following morning, they strolled along the serene riverbanks and explored the vibrant Hohematte Park, soaking in the mesmerizing Swiss scenery. After lunch, they proceeded to the train station, ready to embark on their journey towards Adelboden. Upon reaching their destination, a warm welcome awaited them, with the Our Chalet van ready to transport their luggage to their ultimate destination.
Once comfortably settled into Our Chalet, the opening ceremony marked the commencement of their remarkable journey. During this ceremony, each Senior Ranger and Adult Volunteer received the ‘Our Chalet’ pins, symbolising the initiation of their extraordinary adventure. Proudly, they pinned the Maltese Flag alongside the flags of other nations represented at Our Chalet. Among their fellow adventurers were Girl Scouts from the USA, the Philippines, Japan, and Girl Guides from the UK, as well as a Girl Guide from Greece. The adventure continued with a guided tour of Our Chalet, offering a glimpse into the rich history of this WAGGGS World Centre. During this tour, the Senior Rangers also had the privilege of proudly affixing Maltese badges onto the collective badge board, symbolising their presence.
Their adventure in Our Chalet kicked off with a visit to a suspension bridge in Adelboden, followed by a scenic hike to Frutigen. There, they had lunch before taking on the challenge of a climbing tower. The evening concluded with a Swiss night, immersing the Guides in the local culture and traditions. On their second day, the Unit embarked on a scenic journey to Engstligen Falls, venturing into Engstligenalp, where they encountered cows roaming freely. Subsequently, they visited a cheese maker and wrapped up with an international night, celebrating unity and diversity.
The following day offered a break from the program, prompting the Group to explore the Cholerenschlucht and visit a renowned wood carver, famous among guides and scouts for wooden woggles and souvenirs. Later, they marvelled at the jaw-dropping views from Tschentenalp and took turns on an exhilarating giant swing. Day four was a whirlwind of adrenaline-pumping activities, as the Group made its way to the Adelboden Adventure Park. There, they spent two hours navigating ziplines and mastering the art of speed abseiling. Afterwards, they ventured into Adelboden Village, ending the day around a campfire, sharing stories and forging lifelong bonds.
The fifth day saw the Guides exploring the charming towns of Thun and Spiez, with a visit to the grand Thun Castle adding a touch of history to their adventure. Some of the girls even took a refreshing dip in Lake Spiez. The day concluded with a touching closing ceremony, commemorating the remarkable journey shared by the 7th Rabat Girl Guides. On their final day of adventures, the Unit initially planned to experience the toboggan run at Oeschinensee but were met with unpredictable weather. Undaunted, they opted for a change of plans and found themselves at the enchanting Blausee, creating an alternative adventure that was equally unforgettable.
The 7th Rabat Girl Guides’ time at Our Chalet was simply amazing! From thrilling adventures to diving deep into new cultures and exploring breath-taking scenery, every moment was a reminder of the magic of friendship, adventure and the Guiding spirit. Undoubtedly, this unforgettable experience will be etched in their memories forever!
