A Swiss Adventure to Remember: 35th Attard Girl Guides Exploring Our Chalet

Last September, the 35th Attard Girl Guides embarked on an unforgettable trip to Switzerland, where they had the opportunity to visit one of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts’ (WAGGGS) iconic World Centres: Our Chalet in Adelboden.

The trip began early on a Sunday morning when the group left Malta, full of excitement. After landing in Zurich, they navigated the Swiss transport system, taking two trains and a bus to Adelboden. Tanya, the World Centre Manager, greeted them warmly at the bus stop. Thanks to a pre-arranged luggage transfer, they were able to trek up the hill to Squirrel House, their home for the week, without carrying heavy bags. Once settled, the group participated in a pinning ceremony and a tour of the facilities. The day ended with a lively Swiss Night, where the girls performed for their peers. Exhausted but content, they rested in preparation for the week ahead.

The second day brought thrilling adventures at an Adventure Park in Adelboden. High ropes challenges, a slow abseil and exhilarating zip lines kept everyone engaged. A cookout lunch added to the outdoor excitement and later, the group returned to Squirrel House to prepare dinner together.

The third day included a visit to a Suspension Bridge, where the group enjoyed stunning views and treated the girls to a sweet surprise at a quaint bar on the far side. After crossing back, they explored the Adelboden center and relaxed at a local playground. Later in the day, they visited a woodcarver, where personalized souvenirs were purchased. The day concluded with a campfire organized by Our Chalet, where the girls connected with volunteers and learned new dances.

Despite the drizzly weather on the fourth day, the group visited the breathtaking Enstligen Waterfall. The rain did little to dampen their spirits, as rolling down hills became a highlight of the day. That evening, they played “A Night with Werewolves”, a game that quickly turned into a nightly tradition.

On the fifth day, the group enjoyed beautiful weather, allowing them to explore Our Chalet’s grounds. They played a group game called “Sardines” and spent the day preparing skits for their own campfire. That evening, the girls’ creative performances showcased their teamwork and imagination.

The sixth day featured a trip to Tshentenalp via cable car, where the group experienced a giant swing and a short scenic hike. The day ended with a traditional Swiss Fondue dinner, a delightful way to embrace Swiss culture before packing for their departure.

The group left Adelboden on the seventh day and traveled to Bern, where they explored the historic city center. Highlights included seeing the Bears of Bern and strolling along the serene riverside paths. Despite heavy rain on the eighth day, the group persevered with their plans, taking a funicular up Gurten Hill. While waiting for the rain to subside, the girls enjoyed a playground and ball track. They worked together to construct a shelter for a cookout, demonstrating teamwork and resilience. The day ended with a cheerful pyjama pizza party.

The trip concluded with a special treat on the ninth day: a surprise visit to the Lindt chocolate factory. Before heading to Zurich Airport, the girls enjoyed a final highlight when the pilot of their flight, who was the father of one of the girls, invited the group for a cockpit tour and shared treats. They returned home to a warm welcome from their families, their hearts full of joy and cherished memories. This journey offered the 35th Attard Girl Guides an incredible opportunity to explore Switzerland’s natural beauty, embrace challenges and strengthen their bonds as a Unit. It was a testament to the spirit of adventure, community and the joy that Guiding brings.
