On the 22nd of February, Girl Guides and Girl Scouts worldwide come together to commemorate World Thinking Day. It’s a day of reflection, solidarity and action, where members of this global movement think about crucial issues and envision a better world. This year, the theme for World Thinking Day is Our World, Our Thriving Future, emphasising the pivotal role girls and young women play in building a sustainable and equitable future, free from poverty and environmental degradation.
For the leaders, the event began with insightful discussions on the theme, followed by an engaging scavenger hunt. This hunt not only sparked creativity but also highlighted the importance of resourcefulness and innovation in addressing environmental challenges. Leaders were tasked with building something meaningful using materials found during the hunt, reinforcing the message of sustainability and mindful consumption. To finish off the celebrations, the leaders gathered for the Thinking Day candle ceremony, a cherished tradition where members light candles to symbolise their commitment to the values of Guiding. It was a beautiful moment of reflection and solidarity as leaders reaffirmed their dedication to making the world a better place.
Meanwhile, our younger members, Dolphins and Brownies, embarked on their own journey of exploration and learning. Through a series of lively activities tailored to their age group, they delved into the theme of Our World, Our Thriving Future. They learned about things like recycling, saving energy and protecting wildlife. These activities helped them understand that even though they’re young, they can still make a big difference in the world!
The overarching theme of this year’s World Thinking Day offered a global perspective on critical issues such as environmental conservation, sustainability, gender equality, peace and poverty. It serves as a call to action for all members to recognise their role in shaping a brighter future and to take meaningful steps towards positive change.
This World Thinking Day also marked the culmination of a three-year journey for members to become environmental changemakers. Through discussions, hands-on activities and collaboration, girls have gained a deeper understanding of their impact on the environment and have been inspired to work together for a sustainable future led by girls.
None of these activities would have been possible without the generous support of ERA – Environment & Resources Authority, whose sponsorship and dedication to safeguarding the environment have contributed immensely to the success of our events!
